Onshore, nearshore, or offshore: what the rate gap really buys
The single biggest lever on your QA bill is where the testers sit. The spread is wide and it’s real: US-based QA runs $85 to $165 an hour, Eastern Europe $30 to $55, and India and Vietnam $18 to $35. That’s a three-to-five-times gap on the same job title, so it’s worth knowing what the premium actually buys and where it doesn’t.
Onshore buys full time-zone overlap and shared product context. When a tester can walk into your standup and ask why a flow exists, ambiguity dies fast. Offshore buys the rate cut, and it works best when the ambiguity is already gone: a written test plan, clear acceptance criteria, and a definition of done a stranger could follow. The failure mode is predictable. Teams that toss a half-specified feature over the wall to a $20-an-hour tester and expect $150-an-hour judgment get exactly what they scoped.

What’s actually included in a software testing engagement?
A test plan is not a stack of test cases, and a QA engagement is not one person clicking through your app. A real engagement moves through phases, and you’re paying for all of them whether the quote itemizes them or not.
Test planning and scope. What gets tested, on which browsers and devices, against which acceptance criteria, and what’s explicitly out of bounds. This is where a good partner pushes back on a vague scope instead of billing hours against it.
Test case design. Turning requirements into concrete, repeatable checks: the happy paths, the error paths, and the boundary cases nobody thought about until a user hit them.
Functional and regression execution. The core work. Does the feature do what it should, and did shipping it break something that used to work. Regression is the part teams skip under deadline and pay for two releases later.

Specialized passes. Performance testing under real traffic, security testing, API and integration testing, mobile-device coverage, accessibility. You add these by risk, not by default.
Defect reporting and retest. Every issue logged with enough detail for an engineer to reproduce it, ranked by severity, then re-verified after the fix. A bug marked “fixed, trust me” and never retested is exactly the one that reopens in production.

Manual testing or test automation: which should you pay for?
Both, in a ratio that fits your release cadence. The rates split cleanly: manual QA testers bill around $15 to $35 an hour, automation engineers $20 to $50, and test architects $45 to $80 at agency rates. Automation costs more per hour and less per release once the suite exists, because the tests run themselves at 2am while nobody watches.
Here’s the honest fork. Automation is worth it when you have a stable feature you’ll regression-test on every build, a release cadence fast enough that manual re-checking can’t keep up, or a critical path a failure would be expensive to miss. It’s a waste when the feature is still churning weekly (you’ll spend more maintaining brittle tests than running manual checks), when you’re testing something once, or when the thing you’re checking is how the product feels, which no script can judge. Exploratory testing, usability, and first-look passes stay human. A build that changes shape every sprint doesn’t earn an automation suite yet.
Our bias, stated as a bias: most teams over-invest in automation too early and under-invest in a clear test plan. A written plan a junior tester can follow catches more real defects in month one than a flashy framework catches in month three. Get the plan right first, then automate the parts that stopped moving.
When do you need a QA partner instead of hiring in-house?
Run the fully loaded number before you decide. A senior QA automation engineer in a US tech hub doesn’t cost their salary, they cost their salary plus benefits, taxes, recruitment, and tooling, which adds up to about $219,000 a year on a $145,000 base. The same coverage bought as a service runs roughly $70,000 to $95,000, a 50 to 60 percent saving. Even the raw salary is not small: US QA engineers earn a median base of $102,610, scaling from $60,000 to $84,000 at entry to $150,000 to $200,000+ for staff-level SDETs and QA architects. In-house versus outsourced, one senior QA seat
So when does in-house still win? When QA is core to your product’s identity and you want that judgment on payroll permanently. When your domain is so specialized that context takes months to build and you can’t afford to rebuild it every contract. When you’re large enough that a full-time team stays busy every week, so you’re not paying for a bench.
