This is the feature owners forget to ask about and then can’t live without. Yes: a well-built AI answering service can tell when a caller is speaking Spanish and switch languages mid-call, or run bilingual from the first word. The caller never hits a wall.
The size of that wall is bigger than most people guess. Roughly 42 million people in the United States speak Spanish at home, out of nearly 68 million who speak a language other than English (Census, 2019 American Community Survey). And about 39% of US Spanish speakers don’t speak English “very well” (Census, 2018-2022 ACS). Picture that customer calling a contractor about a leaking roof, getting an English-only voicemail, and hanging up. They’re not in your missed-call report as “Spanish-speaking lead lost.” They’re just a number that never called back. The thing that keeps all of this safe is escalation design, and it’s where most of the trust lives. A voice agent that escalates well is one your customer barely clocks as AI. One that escalates badly, that confidently gives a wrong answer or dead-ends a sensitive call, is the story that ends up on social media. When you scope a build, the escalation rules deserve more attention than how human the voice sounds.

Pricing splits into three shapes, and the differences matter more than the headline numbers.
Packaged self-serve tools, flat monthly. These are the ones you sign up for yourself. Flat, predictable, and a genuinely good fit for a small business with straightforward calls.
Per-minute AI voice platforms. Developer-leaning tools that price by talk time. Bland AI publishes $0.14 a minute on Start, $0.12 on Build, and $0.11 on Scale, all-inclusive (the rate covers the speech, the language model, and the telephony in one number). These are powerful but assume you’ll do the building.
Live human services, metered. The traditional option, and the most expensive at volume. Ruby’s live receptionists start at $250 a month for 50 minutes and climb to $1,725 a month for 500 minutes, 24/7 and fully human, but billed by the minute, so hold time and transfers run the meter. For reference, Smith.ai sells both: its AI tier starts around $95 a month for a limited call bundle ($2 to $3 a call after), while its human Virtual Receptionist starts at $300 a month for 30 calls with $11-a-call overage. Across the industry, human answering services run $200 to $600 a month for business hours, billed at roughly $0.65 to $1.75 per minute.
What the market charges, by type
The structural point under those numbers: flat beats metered the moment volume rises. A human meter charges you more in your busiest month, the exact month you most needed every call answered. Flat AI pricing doesn’t, which means you stop rationing the thing that answers your phone. When a packaged tool beats a custom build
Here’s an opinion we’ll defend, even though it sometimes talks us out of a project: if you run a small business with simple calls, buy the packaged tool, don’t hire us to build one. A solo dentist, a one-van HVAC outfit, a small salon that mostly needs “answer, book, take a message” doesn’t need a custom engineering project. A Goodcall or a similar self-serve service will have you live this week for a flat fee, and that’s the right call. A custom build earns its cost when the off-the-shelf box stops fitting. You need it to book into a specific scheduling system the packaged tools don’t integrate with. You’re handling enough volume, or enough kinds of calls, that the generic flows start dropping things. You need it wired into a CRM so a captured lead lands as a real record, not an email.
